I can attest to that. It sucks. I am going to try to follow your
recommendations, Igor and report.
LR 3.x was much snappier even on lowly Intel 8400 Dual Core, while
presently I have i5 and still it is slow indeed.

On one Russian forum, I found some summary related to the fact that LR
4.1 is rather sluggish especially when switching between photos in
Develop module, - it takes 5-6-7 seconds.
I haven't experienced this myself, - as despite purchasing LR 4.1, I
haven't installed it yet [because Adobe morons cut off XP on this
version].
Don't kick me, - I am just passing the info "as is".
The person summarized a bunch of suggested solutions and marked what
did or didn't work for him.
Here is a quick translation of that summary:
- Create 1:1 previews
* doesn't help
- Remove monitor profile(s)
* helpes a bit (~10% faster) no doesn't solve the problem in general.
- Not to use the 2nd monitor
* does make it somewhat faster
- Install a new video card
* LR doesn't care.
- Switchto the old process (2010 instead of 2012)
* Doesn't help
- Install LR 2.4RC (beta)
* Helps. It's working ~2x as fast: changing photos takes ~3 sec.
Beta-version seems to work fine.
! Warning: the beta version installas itself over 4.1 which is Awful!
- Reduce the size of the LR window while working in Develop module -
to a half or 1/4 of the screen [IR: how large is his screen to make
that possible?]
* Helps very much. Decreasing to the smallest visible size shows that
the switching between photos is immediate.
YMMV.
HTH,
Igor
