I'm with you there, Frank. Australia has one of the highest
concentrations of pokies per capital in the world (without googling,
definitely in the top ten). It kills live music. Pubs find it much
easier to put in pokies for the steady income than to have to deal with
the chancey indie music caper. But more outrageous to my mind is the
clear opiate tax is has on those who can least afford it.
The pub used to be one of my watering holes when I worked nearby.
Harold, the owner of the East Sydney was famous for holding onto his
poker machine licenses but deliberately not using using them. But he's
getting tired and wants to sell. Still hanging in there, so I try to
drop by when I can.

And the rest are amazing as well!
What's with the "No poker machines" at the bar. Are they a problem there? (I
personally don't like them but that's a long story for another time - or not)
cheers,

Subject: Atget, whispering trees, and spending Sunday on the street
Someone mentioned the Eugune Atget exhibit happening in Sydney at the
moment. Managed some time to see it yesterday, and it bears taking the
time. All are 8x10 contact contact prints, and beautifully toned. Highly
recommended.

Art and About is an annual art festival, with the pieces taking place on
the street (Sydney Life is part of it). Video is a significant part of
it this year, and fires up after sunset.

I hung around to take in Last Drinks, and the wonderful Emergence. Faces
projected onto trees in Hyde Park, to the soundtrack of old leftie
anthems, being whistled. The Internationale never sounded so moving.

A refreshing beverage and some jazz at one of my old favourite pubs when
I was working in the city (East Sydney Hotel) was a nice way to end the day
