Ann, Dan, Steve, thanks for your comments. FWIW the older gentleman is on the steps of the National Club, one of a half-dozen or so private clubs left in Toronto. This one is one of the oldest and most prestigious; a real "old boys' club" until they made them take old girls a couple of decades ago.
I have no idea what they were talking about but I liked the way the older of the two seemed to be keeping the upper hand by standing a step up on the younger fellow.
