Great shot, George!

What lens were you using? I've never been able to get anywhere near that close to one with my 300mm zoom.

Anyone know what kind of bird this is?

It showed up at the duck pond in a local city park recently.  It's
been hanging out with the ducks and geese.  I know there is a big
flock of Sandhill Cranes in the Safari Park about 25 or 30 miles south
of town, maybe it's one of those.
