Just about twice the power I have to play with.

Considering the differences in file size between K-5 and 645D I guess our user experiences are somewhat similar. :-) Btw, the computer started out with a dual core and 8 GB RAM in 2008, and was upgraded to present config when I bought the big D. It's as far as I could get with the particular mobo.

If I set up hierarchies, will they automatically apply to photos that already have keywords?

Yes. All the work is done inside the "Keyword List" panel. I recommend you build your hierarchy from the bottom, and create colloquial terms with successively broader scopes. As you go, you can drag & drop your existing keywords onto the new terms. All photos with the original keywords will then be updated to have the hierarchical terms as well. You can also drag & drop one hierarchy inside another.

You may want to consider the properties of the hierarchical terms wrt. privacy. If keywords are checked to propagate on export, you will expose your way of thinking about your photos to the recipient.

This was the controversy with earlier versions in the 4.x generation. With LR 3.x, many users got pissed with Adobe because they didn't understand this. Then when they gave away, or sold, images containing keywords like "jerks" or "bridezillas", they blamed Adobe for compromising their privacy. :-) Adobe got tired of this, and removed a good chunk of functionality. To the frustration of people who used the features constructively. Now it's back, and with a somewhat cleaner interface than in v3.x.
