There is a new visitors centre there which has a very impressive timeline in the floor. The thing that surprised me is how much older Fountains Abbey is than Macchu Pichu, which I always thought of as quite old, with an ancient civilisation etc. It puts into perspective how old and continuous our own civilisation is (notwithstanding Disraeli's remark to Daniel O'Connell). > i like the random stone in the middle of the impossibly green lawn; > what about "fountains"? > <http://iati.savethechildren.org.uk/files/ppa20110401.xml> It's in a very wet part of England. The last time I was in that area it had been raining very heavily for several days and the sides of all the hills were springing with vast quantities of water.
