Totally depends on the end use. How is the structure loaded? Would you put the fastener in shear or tension? Makes all the difference in the world, mechanically. In any case, a screw hammered in with a hammer is stupid. Works less efficiently then a nail would, and is pitiful in tension (pulling along the axis of the fastener.)
