Well, if I'd been =really= ambitious (and even crazier), I would have cut down 
the tree and counted the rings...

Fountains Abbey and the adjoining Studley Royal Manor have changed hands nine 
or ten times since Henry VIII; though it seems that most of the construction 
using the abbey as a supply of stone occurred in the 1600s.  Could the stairway 
date from then?  I have no idea.

Glad you like the shot!  It was a great place to visit.

the stair must be older than the tree at least - brings back memories
of my time in the UK - the Abbey I read is 12th Century - which is
about the time New Zealand was colonised by Maori - the last large
landmass on planet to be so.
