Different versions of Word have different ways of solving the same
annoyance, but off the top of my head I'd say you need to split the document
into sections and use different headers and footers for the different
sections, with different types of page numbering.

Word 2010 does quite a lot of this for you - you can insert a specific type
of page, such as a cover page, and it offers you a number of different
choices and layouts, but I don't have it here, only at work, and it's
probably as easy for you to search microsoft's help site as it is for me to
do it and post what I find.
