Reminds me of a post I saw over the weekend that suggested removing the front lens element of any old lens to turn it into a macro (presumably with a maximum focusing distance, per this discussion). They were doing it with an 18-55mm kit lens. Not sure if that strategy would work for many/most lenses, but it does give one something to try with those ubiquitous valueless lenses that one tends to accumulate.
