Christine, if you look at all my Sports, Basketball photos, they are all manual focus. You have to follow the ball or just pre focus at the basket or mid court. If you are going to use auto focus, make sure you use spot focus. Some gyms have bleachers at the ends of the court where you could sit and wait for the action to come your way. Another thing if you have a long lens, 300 mm or longer, shoot from one end of the court to the other. If you are using a K5, raise up the iso and try high speed sync with the flash or use the flash on manual at 1/4, 1/16 power not using high speed sync. Or just do not use the flash at all with high iso settings...Hope this helps, Joe

Half-time at a basketball game: DA* 50-135 slow and fussy when focusing. Really struggling with equipment. Refs always in the way as well. Ugh!

Hope 2nd half is better.
