That's not just any ol' teleconverter - it's the Pentax F 1.7X AF Converter, which is not just a 1.7X TC, but will also autofocus with many manual focus lenses. (The lenses do have to be fast enough to start with that there's enough light left passing through the 1.7X TC for the autofocus sensors in the AF camera body.)
