HI Stan - The sensor can "see" the image far better than my eye can
through the finder - even with all the extension the image is fairly
bright on the screen. I assume the camera ramps up the ISO for
composing. My eyes just can't adjust fast enough. Live View on the K5
almost gets you there, but without the focus peaking and with the very
shallow DOF it is still hard to focus well. before this I would bracket
focus - take a shot at my best guess of what was in focus and then tweak
the focus a bit either way in hopes that if my eye was off I could still
get something.

How does this help you if the image is so dark due to the extensive extensions
that you cannot see anything?

All images were shot with the K-01, a Sigma 50mm f2.8 EX macro, and extension.
The snow was very variable in size today, so I used all the extension that I
have (about 230mm) for a few shots, and only about 50mm for a few other. Plus
everything in between.
I should comment that the second crystal in that post was very small and was
shot with 230mm of extension - tubes and bellows. That is where the focusing
peaking really shined. WIth all that extension a finder is so dark you can
barely see, and with live view and no focus peaking it is very difficult to see
what is in focus. The K-01 made it simple and easy to focus on that little
bugger.
