FWIW, I don't think those prices were in US dollars & probably include a VAT.

Yes - that's $A, and back when the *istD was released, the $A was equivalent to about 0.6$US. These days 1$A buys about 1.05$US.

A 10% Goods and Services tax (GST) was introduced in Australia in 2000 so that price probably did include a VAT. However, the GST replaced other wholesale taxes so it's not clear how much influence the GST would have had on that price.

Cheers

Rob,
That's one of those expensive A* lenses in the photo as well.
Was it the A*85/1.4 or the A*135/1.8?
I waited a while before I bought a digital,
but when I got to the Grandfather Mountain weekend, I caved.
Ordered a *ist DS on the drive back to Illinois.
But $3,099! even for Ozzie $ at the time, that was pricey!
Regards, Bob S.
