Either way, this fellow's helpful review of how to best use the software might prove useful, whichever scanner you purchase: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3THLREMM62JRP/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R3THLREMM62JRP
hmm, i'm not impressed with that reviewer's note on VueScan - there's nothing about ViewScan's workflow that depends on making adjustments in the app, and of course VueScan can autocrop, etc. if desired
second, the description of using the Epson Scan controls seems like it would leave a lot on the table, so to speak, and has the same pitfalls as doing similar adjustments in VueScan
i also noticed the V600 has a 6cm max transparency width; my 4990 has can scan transparencies across the whole bed, which means 8 slides can fit at once in the holder, which i have used a lot (fully automated with VueScan)
