Thanks, Jack.

This shot was really impromptu. Larry (the guy in the photo, and a very good shot) was just shooting around for some practice when I asked him if it would distract him if I took a few snaps. Over the years, I've noticed that a lot of pool players are very animated after taking a shot, and I wanted to get the shooter in the frame, so I figured I'd see if I'd have any luck getting a reasonably sharp capture if I kept the shutter speed somewhere around 1/20 or 1/30 sec. Someday, I'll actually recruit someone to knock the balls around while I shoot. Maybe one of the attractive girls (maybe LeeAnn from my photos from earlier in the month) would be willing to work with me.

I figure if I can get the hang of capturing someone shooting an actual game, getting a staged shot will be relatively easy. At that point, I'll use settings closer to what you're talking about. They strike pretty sound suggestions for capturing the motion and DOF that I'd ultimately like to have.

Thanks for the input!

Walt, you've probably thought through this process and had good reason for your
camera settings.
I'd probably have started off with a very small aperture (f/16 or 22) and 80
ISO. That is if you simply want more evidence of motion.(?) Could possibly try
a range of cue ball speeds.
These settings would maybe require the shooter to hold his post shot cue
position for a moment.
Will be looking for more of your shots.

Jack

So, I took the camera to work again over the weekend (forgot to take the
tripod, dammit) and thought I'd take another what at capturing motion on the
pool tables.

This is probably the best I got, though I wish I'd bumped the ISO up and closed
the aperture a bit instead of shooting at f/2.8 -- which gave me less DOF than
I'd have liked.

But, I did manage to get some decent motion and will be better prepared next
time with regard to DOF.

Thoughts, comments, tips and/or suggestions eagerly solicited.

Thanks!
