That fake layer thing is from onOne, not Nik. Two completely independent companies.

I tested a free promo plugin of theirs a while back and it succeeded in crashing Photoshop and messing up my installation. I had to reinstall Ps and get rid of onOne. Ya gotta wonder what kind of testing they do.
