Thanks, Jack, Alan and Frank! This object is sticking about a foot out of the sand on a popular beach in Maui, called Keawekapu. Sometimes it is completely buried in the sand, and at other times it is much further out of the sand, along with a straight iron rod with a nut on the end and a chunk of concrete. I think they are remnants of a boat dock that stood there once, used for loading raw sugar bound for California and cattle bound for other parts of the islands. I think it looks more mysterious when only the single piece of iron is visible.
