Rennes (metro population ~600,000) is the capital of Brittany, in France.  In
1720 a large fire destroyed about half the city, which was almost entirely
half-timbered buildings on narrow, tangled streets.  The burned area was
cleared and rebuilt with a grid plan and stone buildings, but a good deal of
the original medieval-Renaissance town remains.  For example:

I was unable to determine whether the gentleman shuffling along was Renaissance
or medieval.

Comments appreciated!
