Possibly easy fix: disable the Auto Power Off function. Page 17 of
manual. If it doesn't power down it shouldn't switch modes.

Auto power off is somewhat pointless anyway. There's no appreciable
battery drain after hours of on time. On the other hand it prevents
complete discharge if you walk away from the set and forget to turn
the flashes off.

Does yours spontaneously flip to P-TTL mode while simply sitting there
on a stand? That's what Larry reports (I think) and is not an issue
I've ever seen with my two. They always come up in P-TTL -- ie a total
configuration reset -- upon power-up, but otherwise they stay put in
whatever mode I set them, especially off-camera. I'm starting to
wonder if there are different firmware revision levels of the 540FGZ
out there.
