I've found a dumb workaround is to put the camera into continuous-focus mode.

The focus failure mode is always that it zips right into the "neighborhood" of 
the correct focus but refuses to lock (I get the flashing hexagon(octagon?) in 
the viewfinder).

With continuous-focus, it WILL (if you set the camera up this way) ultimately 
take the shot even if the camera doesn't 'think' it is in locked focus.

So, press, hold, and push the shutter button all the way in and... CLICK photo 
taken.

If you look closely, you'll see that I have the problem occasionally STILL with 
the K5 - although far less frequently.
