I did have a problem with just the front wheel "freezing" while I shooting

Fortunately the front wheel in the battery grip continued to work. And later
in the day, after the sun was up & the ambient temperature rose, the front
wheel started working again.
John, that dial freezing is actually a documented design quirk with
the battery grip. See "Memo" at the bottom of page 14 of the D-BG2
manual. The e-dials on the camera and grip must be solidly clicked
into their detents or their opposite numbers will fail to register.
This happens to me all the time when using the grip and discourages me
from using it much.
I don't think that's what happened, because it spontaneously stopped
working when it was really cold and spontaneously started working again
when the temperature got warmer.
Mostly I leave the battery grip switch in the off position so I won't
get hip bumps tripping the shutter. I don't even know why I thought to
turn it on & check if the the e-dials on the grip would work.
