I had new-for-old insurance, but at the time Pentax did not have a coherent range of gear that interested me. If I had to buy from scratch now, they do seem to have improved a bit, but they still do not seem to me to have a well thought-out consistent range. Back in the old days they'd bring out a new line, say the A or M series, with bodies, lenses and accessories that satisfied entry-level up to advanced or professional standard. It all appears rather haphazard and piecemeal to me now, as if they're half-heartedly chasing the game rather than setting their own direction.
At around that time I was also working as a contractor and had quite a high disposable income, so I could indulge myself in gear like Leica that I had always wanted. So in short, people's circumstances and desires change, the brand doesn't necessarily fulfil those new desires, so people move on. The factors you mention are not the only ones that determine people's choices.
