Just a note,

   Most schools are getting rid of these types of thermometers because
they contain mercury.  Newer mercury thermometers are encased in a
coating of plastic.  Most of our thermometers are of the newer type. 
These _appear_ to be the older type, so just handle them carefullly.

   As an aside, mercury thermometers do tend to be more accurate over a
wider range of temps than their alcohol counterparts . . .

   Mercury poisoning is not a joke.  Just the teacher in me.
