Since you're going to the Royal Gorge, here's a small round trip that will be beautiful. A little west of there is Gunnison. From there go up the mountain to Gunnison Pass. (That might not be its official name, but you'll go from Gunnison to Buena Vista Up on top, about 11000 ft, you'll have a great view of the high plateau. It's a great place to drive through, and from there you can make your way back down to Colorado Springs with ease.
