Maybe this also is different in a rural area, but I'm in constant stress
from worrying about getting killed in traffic, which is an entirely
reasonable threat.  (Don't get me wrong, I don't spend my time thinking
about it, but I know the stress is there.)

Once on my bicycle (a few decades ago), I saw a driver make a turn the
wrong direction onto a one-way residential street.  Ever since I've been
conscious of how easy it is to get tagged by "random" events.  More
recently, I've evolved the following aphorism:

    Everyone is one second of inattention away from being a moron

Terrorists are just one small additional layer of paranoia.  Look at the
explosion in Texas -- way more damage than the Boston attack and probably
not deliberate.
