I've seen it with my own eyes.  If you live in the SF Bay Area, it's worth a
trek down to Calypso Imaging in Santa Clara.  Calypso does digital work for
people like Galen Rowell, Franz Lanting, William Neill, Kennan Ward, etc.
Last time I was there, they had images by Franz Lanting on their wall that
were at least 3' by 5' (about 1 x 1.5 meters).  They were produced from
scanned 35mm slides.  Their clarity, even close up, was impressive to
behold.

They also had a nice example that was taken with a Nikon D1x by Uwe
Steinmueller.  It was blown up to about 24" x 36" (about 0.7 x 1.0 meters).
It looked good from a distance, but it betrayed its digital birth close up.
I think that even with a larger sensor these artifacts will still be present
(maybe not with the new Foveon sensor, however).

Looks to me like 35mm chromes still have legs if you're willing to pay for
really high quality scanning and printing.
