Well, perhaps you think it's sad, Frank, bur I'm not so sure.

When I was young. I spent a lot of time at my maternal grandparents'
home, as both my parents worked. My grandfather had a small butcher
shop (in addition to his gas station on the other side of town. Since
his ethnic customer base was wary of chickens that were already dead,
he had some chicken coop, and took the eggs and the live chickens to
the store. I was hired, for a few cents, to gather eggs from the
coops.

At Thanksgiving and Christmas, everyone wanted turkeys, instead of
chickens. My grandfather was shocked by how much he had to pay for
the Turkeys, and since his customers were people of very modest means,
how little profit he could make on the turkeys he purchase. So, one
year, when I was 8 or 9, he decides to raise his own turkeys. WHAT A
MISTAKE! They are the dumbest, dirtiest, nastiest critters I have
ever encountered. I refused to go into their pen to feed them after
the first 3 or 4 attempts, which left me with scratches, bite marks
and turkey shit all over my arms and legs. Thank God they couldn't
fly; they surely would have pecked my eyes out.
