I have a similar problem with a Tokina ATX 400 f5.6 - just that lens. It 
will kick to f 90 or something like that and not change. If I remove the 
lens and re-seat it, it goes back to working. It also works fine in A 
mode... When I re-seat the lens I can feel a little resistance when turning 
the body and lens. I _think_ that the levers in the lens mount are not 
hooking up correctly - though like in yours case DOF preview works OK.  So 
for what it's worth - take a look at the little lever in the lens mount - 
maybe it got bent a wee bit?
