I have a no-name powered USB 2.0 hub attached to my iMac running 10.7.5 It works fine for low-power uses like reading SD cards. And I can synch and charge my iPhone or iPad with it. It is flakey if I attach a hub-powered external disc drive; usually the drive will connect and be all right for a while, but if the system Sleeps, the drive often doesn't reconnect on wake-up. And if I try to connect both an iPhone and an external drive, the drive never powers up. On the other hand, I have a high-priced hub from OWC that manages several hard drives with little problem. But they do have their own power source, and they are less reliable than the drives on the FW hub.
