Or I can set it to m90, at which point it no longer needs the battery
to take a photo.  The battery was just dead.

I'm not aware of the difference, though one of my 100 or 105s has
an "e" in the description (105e/2.8?)

This is a Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 4057598
It's about twice the size of my DA 40 ltd and about half the 
size of my DA 35 macro.
