I've always read that it's the same formula as the AL II. But I've
generally been happy enough with my 18-55's (the original AL and the
WR). For example, when I got an A28/2.8, I compared it to the WR, and
found the A28 to be sharper in the center, but the WR to be better at
the edges, at the same aperture. On my K10D, the 18-55s were sharp
enough, under some circumstances, to induce aliasing artifacts like
false color and "maze patterns" (the K10D had a weak, one-dimensional
antialiasing filter).

Some people really seem to think they're dogs, so I don't know if it's
sample variation or what.
