Hi Shel, Bob, Fred, ....
Another option to consider, at least for those in the US, is plastic caps
from a company called Caplugs ("cap plugs" -- get it?). I believe their
manufacturing headquarters are in Buffalo, NY. They make those colored
plastic plugs that you often find stuck over the ends of iron pipe, etc. I
was looking for a huge cap a few years ago to fit over the end of a
reflecting telescope with a roughly 9.5-inch ID telescope tube. The nice
lady at Caplugs sent me one -- for free! Something suitable from a regular
telescope retailer would have cost me at least $10 or $15, I imagine.
Caplugs' toll-free telephone number is 1-888-CAPLUGS, and their website URL
is http://www.caplugs.com. I like their T-series product, which can be used
as a cap (fits over the outside of your lens) or a plug (fits into a round
opening just like a stopper would). Go to their homepage, click on "Caps",
then "Non-threaded", then "Tapered", then "Show all series", then "T
Series". You'll see the drawings and specifications for the smallest ten
caps in this product line. You'll have to keep clicking on the "Next 10"
button to see progressively larger caps. These are made of low-density
polyethylene, but are a bit beefier than standard lens caps and coffee-can
lids.
Hope this helps.
