Thanks, Bruce. I've checked every way I know. Time Machine has a record back to December 2, 2012. The last image was uploaded on December 12. Not in the Trash Bin, either and it goes all the way back to August 6, 2009. I had my images in a folder at the top level of my file system, along with /Documents, /Downloads, /Library, etc. /Photos Catalog is on that level, too, and it's still there. I'm certain that I haven't moved or deleted anything on that level for a *long* time. Maybe ever. It is possible that it accidentally got moved somewhere lower down. [I checked the /Documents folder, but it wasn't there.] I'll make a more systematic check lower down, > As for avoiding loss, besides the internal drive, Time Machine can be > told to backup other attached drives and that's how I use it. Maybe I should set my system up that way. As it is, I have Time Machine backing up to one external drive, and then Carbon Copy Cloner backing up sequentially to two other drives. I'm sure I didn't have anywhere near as many images as you guys---and gals---do. Most of mine date from early 2010, when I got my ist*DS. There are a few older than that. But everything I had is gone. Just remembered that I gave my daughter a thumb drive of folders I took at her wedding and of her family subsequently. Maybe I'll be able to get that back.
