I was shooting the local "Sand in the City" event today. About 100
shots in, the camera locked the shutter button and said the CF card
needed to be formatted.

That was a minor shock. I've never had a problem with this equipment
before. I wasn't to concerned because the camera has two card slots.
It was configured to send raw to one card and full size jpegs to the
other. So I had the full size jpegs as a backup.

I replaced both of the cards and finished shooting with no more problems.

Well, all's well that ends well.

The card would mount on Windows but I got the same "format before
using" message that the camera had reported.

The good news is "PhotoRescue" got the files from the card to my hard
drive. It couldn't render them, but I have a feeling that was because
it couldn't recognize the Nikon NEF files. It did, however, extract
the jpeg thumbnail from each file.

Anyway, once the files were transferred to the hard drive, they opened
fine in both Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom. They also converted to
DNG without errors. So I think they should be fine. I kept the full
size jpeg's anyway, just in case.

I talked to my local camera store (where I bought the card) and the
card has a lifetime replacement guarantee, so all is well.

That's a relief.
