Another engineer examined the camera. The pins of the accessory grip are right in line
with the takeup spool; the engineer thinks I must have damaged the spool's core when
trying to force the grip's pins into the camera's grip holes.

How woud I know, from the following instructions at
http://www.butkus.org/chinon/xr-psingle/ricoh.htm, that installing the grip required
depressing the release button?

1. Push the hand grip release button on the bottom of your camera to remove the
standard grip. (Fig. 71 )

2. Press two release grip pegs into camera body holes to snap the release grip into
place. (Fig. 72)

So I've ruined a new camera before taking a single shot. I can't imagine it's worth
trying to get it repaired when I can pick up another on EBay for $100.

I found an online review of the camera's successor, the XR-M, in which the owner said
he had to get the film transport fixed twice before the display finally went dead. I
wonder whether film transports were an Achilles heel of RIcoh SLRs.
