Yeah, I've seen quite a few photos of B17s, but never one like that. There must
have been a reason.
It was a group assembly aircraft. The assembly aircraft left the base
first, and circled for the attacking aircraft to form up on. When the
formations were in order, the attack headed to the target and the
assembly aircraft returned to base. Different groups painted their
assembly aircraft in different highly visible and recognizable paint
schemes so they'd be easier to identify from the combatant aircraft.
