Tom you missed some facts and misquoted some. I read your article with
great relish and did find it enlightening though.
a) History: I go into dusty old small Towns of India - where Pentax is
NOT at all present, No Sales or Service. Most of us diehard Pentaxians
either buy Pentax abroad or import paying 29% Customs Duty + Shipping
- where old timers remember Pentax Film cameras with much admiration
and respect.
The name "Pentax" is still much revered in India.
b) Timeline: Pentax's technological excellence begins waning in the
1990s, as new model releases shrivel. Then in the new millennium they
realize digital is the way and start putting up their act.
c) Circa 2010, and the K-5 takes the DSLR world by storm. DxO mark
declares it as good as the Full Frame Canon 5D Mk II.
And who released it: Pentax-HOYA, NOT RICOH.
d) The market place is very harsh on late comers. Pentax tried to
re-enter a lost market, but just couldn't make it to the ranks of the
Canikons, as the Pros had already moved away with their heavy
investments on their Canikons.
e) Your Quote: "Ricoh continues making K-mount bodies with the Ricoh
name and not PENTAX. If so, then can it be said PENTAX is dead?"
Yes Tom Sir, Pentax is very much DEAD then. In fact Pentax dies when
they remove PENTAX from Pentax-Ricoh Imaging Co.
f) What's in a Name? Is history itself.
Regards.
Bipin - from that far away enchanting land.
