Yes, this is a good news, bad news story. The new stuff is really nice and beautiful, but once you finalize the move, you can't go back. And, all of that customization of the old site will be lost. You can add your banner back in the new customization. The Smugmug design looks like it may be a similar starting point.
I haven't found the "search by date" yet. I used that a lot. On the other hand, changes are so easy to make in the new system, you may not need the custom code. They are saying you can leave your current site up as as long as you want and only change when you are ready, but I don't know about making changes to the old site. They also said this is only the beginning. Now that they have the platform in place (and an ugly lawsuit settled) they will be releasing a more new features. Of course, most software companies say these things. I have a more faith that the Smugmug than most other companies. I watched this hangout last night. It's an interview with the Owners and development team, and it gives some insight into the thought process behind the changes. You'll probably want to fast forward through a lot of it. Ratcliff, Hawk, and Barasa have a hard time staying on topic and joke around a lot. But the parts with the Smugmug team are interesting. It's also a little bit of a Smugmug love fest. <http://youtu.be/Tjk6b1-AQcQ> In case you missed the announcement, here's the video - <http://www.ustream.tv/smugmug> I guess Pogue broke the embargo and announced the change in his NYT column a few hours early and they were reacting to a huge influx of new users and people starting the transition while they were trying to make the announcement. I didn't think his column was all that great but here it is. <http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/07/30/smugmug-revamps-its-site-in-a-challenge-to-flickr/?_r=0> Gotta go - lots of stuff to do today.
