Portland is like every other place in North America: you can't rent Pentax 35mm gear. If you really want a lens like this for the night, plan on renting a body to go with the lens. Nikon and Canon both have good 70/80 - 200/2.8 zooms. A sharper, lighter Nikon lens is the 180/2.8. Canon has a 200/?? (something fast). For a stage performance I would probably first look at Canon to get an IS lens. Just make sure that you are comfortable with the body, regardless of brand. You should feel right at home with a MF Nikon body.
