Thanks guys. I plugged up an external display via DVI. Ext display shows desktop background - so need to turn on mirroring - not difficult to do despite Powerbook screen blank - keyboard shortcut of Command+F1... ...and up comes the desktop on the external monitor and suddenly the Powerbook display springs to life!! Flicked about, rebooted, all seemed well. Disconnected, closed lid to sleep. Woke it and blank screen again. Ack.
