Update. Hoiked out the HDD from the dodgy PowerBook G4 and just before, while I was messing with it, I could get the display to cut in and out at will by gently putting pressure on the top left and lower right corners of the base of the computer. Instantly says hardware fault - could be display connector. Didn't have time to troubleshoot at that point so will chase it down next week. Thanks to all who chipped in. I have another question about Mac software allowing keyboard remapping - see separate thread.
