The hyperfocal distance for a particular focal length and f-stop is the
distance to set the focus such that depth of field will allow infinity
to be in focus.
Ah yes, coming back to me - that's why with my 28mm lens back in the
film days I set it on f.8 and lined the focus up for that. The lens
barrel shows f8 and 3 meters/10 ft in red. with that setting it not
only goes UP to infinity but goes down to 5 feet. Even better at f11.
still works with the 28 on the K-5 :-)

35mm f/8 (16MP on an APS), hyperfocal distance is 25.2 feet.
Subject distance 25.2 ft
Depth of field
Near limit 12.6 ft
Far limit Infinity
Total Infinite
In front of subject 12.6 ft
Behind subject Infinite
Hyperfocal distance 25.2 ft
Circle of confusion 0.02 mm
Zone focusing would be setting your focus to 10 feet so that anything
from 7' to 16' would be in focus:
Subject distance 10 ft
Depth of field
Near limit 7.18 ft
Far limit 16.5 ft
Total 9.31 ft
In front of subject 2.82 ft (30%)
Behind subject 6.49 ft (70%)
and frankly, whatever you call it, I certainly favor checking settings
and making them all manual for shooting from the hip, or out a window
of a moving train or bus.
I'll skip the "walk toward ... " part of his lesson :-)

Heh!

Right down to misunderstanding the difference between hyperfocal distance
and "zone focusing".
