The standard Federation diet consisted of replicated food that was entirely
consumed by the body. The kidneys ( of those that had them) were surgically
modified to cleans fluids and return them to the stomach. Once a week a
small pellet was discharged containing any and all poisons and other
un-needed particles.
(Don't run to your ST/NG/Ent manuals to argue points with me. I'm making
