I take off the rubber cup, and slide the diopter thingy until the lines in the 
viewfinder are sharp.

Ann, this is probably obvious, but center may not be optimal for you.
Stare at the viewfinder info while nudging the diopter adj back and
forth a notch and you may get a sharper position. I also find it's
easier to manipulate that thing if I remove the rubber eye cup first.
