I feel that B&W can handle a certain amount of flat light if contrast is 
carefully punched up a and the highlights held back.

It definitely eliminates my nit about the 'poor' light in the colored version!
Had never thought about going B+W in poor light situations. By poor, I mean not 
the golden light around sunrise/sunset.
