Interesting observations. I've been using the 28-105 PZ a bit these days
for film shooting. It is not a bad lens at all but does get a bit soft
around the edges at the wide end. The rotating front element can also be
a bit of a pain if you are using a polarizer.
DId you test it on an APS-C DSLR? I've been thinking about a replacement
/ upgrade but have not yet found anything that I'm convinced will be
better, especially for film.
I might hold out for a new release - I assume that when Ricoh issues a
full frame DSLR they will also issue a complete new lineup of FF glass
optimized for it... :-)

The lenses compared were (1) FA28-105 (pz) (2) 18-55WF (3) K50/1.4 (4)
70/2.4LTD (5) A50/1.7.
First off, at 50mm, I was surprised how well the 28-105 compared to 2,3, &
5.
The full frame was well-rendered. The A50/1.7's cool cast coatings made for
a bit more contrast.
Sharpness was not a lot different across the range.
But that's at the center of the range of the 28-105 -- which ought to be
expected.
At 70mm it is clearly inferior to the 70. But it was still quite good.
At 35mm the image rendering was good but there was a lot of color fringing.
Though the FA35/2 also showed some
(this was from white flowers in bright sunshine), it we a fraction of what
the 28-105 produced.
While the 18-55 is very good it isn't quite long enough for my work. 28-105
will allow me to shoot in the lens' strong area of 40mm-80mm for best
results.
Recommendation: The FA28-105 (pz) is a very good lens. At the selling
price of around $80 on eBay I can highly recommend it in terms
bang-for-buck.
And if/when FF comes you'll be happy you've got it. ;-)
Would I use it on a pro shoot? Yes. And at the price having a backup copy
is not out of the question.
Also, for the dancers I've been shooting the 105mm reach works well. I need
to go out to about 70mm or there about and this will make the shoots go
better.
