I've always found that the ME-II winder makes my Super Programs about 287% easier to hold. But I've never been fond of the winder's tripod hold, which is way off-center. It failed to steady the camera adequately, and it hurt when the camera bounced against my chest. So I relucantly removed the winders in order to keep my quick-release plates mounted in the camera's tripod hole, located at the center of the baseplate.
Last night, I thought, "I never use the motor; why not install a longer screw and sacrifice the battery chamber?" I would gut the chamber of its electronics and replace the short tripod screw with one long enough to secure the winder and a QR plate. Of course, the battery retaining cover will no longer fit, but it always fell off anyway and I had long ago stopped using it. Taking a jeweler's screwdriver, I removed the eight-odd tiny Philips-head screws that retained a dark metal strip of electronics. The strip wouldn't come out. So I unscrewed the cover of the grip itself, hoping to find a way to release the strip. That, too, proved fruitless, so I simply bent the strip up and down until it fatigued off. Its removal revealed another layer of ugly electronics, but I can eventually cover them with a holed plate. I stuck on my QR plate and tightened it and the winder to the center tripod hole with a longer screw. It works!
