I love the expression and silly mugging.

But there's something about the b&w conversion that bothers my eyes:
his features are fairly dark and there are a number of bright objects
around the image that compete, eg all the the grass and that sandpit
behind. It makes me want to squint.

I'd try applying a red filter preset during the conversion to
hopefully swap those around.
