You must be referring to the fake leatherette on most gripping surfaces. Just 
touch the camera anywhere else and you can tell by the temperature it is metal.

Better yet, test your camera for zero degree operation sometime. Let it cold 
soak for ten minutes. Then touch your tongue to anyplace that isn;t "plastic".
